Education:

Brescia University was founded by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph in 1950. Its origins are in Mount Saint Joseph Junior College for Women, established at Maple Mount, Kentucky, in 1925. Between 1925 and 1950, coeducational extension courses in Owensboro led to the creation of a second campus and, after 1949, consolidation of the two campuses at the present site of Brescia University . In 1951, Brescia began operating as a four-year College.
An independently supported, Catholic, coeducational institution, Brescia now offers undergraduate and graduate course work for career preparation firmly rooted in the liberal arts. Brescia was approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities for a status change in December 1997. On June 1, 1998, Brescia College became Brescia University .

Outreach:

Audubon Area is one of the premier human/family and community services agencies in Kentucky. Audubon's central office is located in Owensboro, Kentucky, a known historic rivertown on the banks of the Ohio River.
Audubon Area primarily serves 34 Western Kentucky counties, from the Ohio River to the Kentucky-Tennessee border and from Mammoth Cave to the Mississippi River. One of its Counseling Services programs, however, the Kentucky Intensive Services Program (KISP) serves all Kentucky counties except three northern ones.
The programs providing service include Child Care Assistance, Community Services Block Grant, Counseling Services, Green River Intra-County Transit System (GRITS), Head Start, Kentucky Works, Lincolnshire, Senior Service Corps, and Weatherization.

Sister Fran Wilhelm has been helping Hispanic migrant workers for more than 10 years. A New Mexico native, she is a member of the Mount St. Joseph Ursulines of Maple Mount and directs Centro Latino, a resource for Hispanic families living in the region. Workers counted 845 Hispanics in Daviess County for the 2000 census, but that likely represented only year-round residents. Sister Fran estimates that about 1,000 Hispanics live in Daviess County, with about 2,000 in the seven-county region. City officials and advocates say the number may jump to several thousand during the growing season.
The staff at Centro Latino doesn't ask if they are here legally because that isn't relative to the mission. The Centro Latino staff sometimes finds health care resources out of the region. The 100 or so Hispanic families the center serves depend on the Centro Latino staff and a few others who volunteer to interpret for them. A staff member also goes to the hospital with pregnant women to interpret during births, Sister Fran said. And Sister Rosemary Keough makes two trips a day to Sebree to take women to prenatal care clinics.

The Church of Epiphany in Louisville, Ky., has a strong social justice and liturgist base. They offer many different social justice organizations. The Ursulines have taken part in the hispanic ministry.
Latino concerns subcommittee attempts to address needs of Hispanic migrant farm community in the Archdiocese. This group meets monthly.

Catholic Charities of Louisville, Inc. is the largest, private human services agency operated by the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Louisville comprises twenty-four counties in Central Kentucky and serves a population of approximately 1.1. million. Catholic Charities of Louisville, Inc., a member of Catholic Charities USA and part of the Catholic Church in Central Kentucky, provides service for people in need, advocates for justice in social structures, and calls the entire Church and other people of good will to do the same.
Currently, we have sisters involved in the Sister Visitor Center and outreach to the elderly. The Sister Visitor Center is an emergency assistance program that provides assistance with the most basic of human needs: food, clothes, assistance with rent, utilities, medicines, furniture etc.
Sister Visitor Center:
- Provides emergency aid with rent, utility bills, prescriptions, medical supplies
- Visits sick, elderly, and handicapped persons, and families in need
- Distributes food, personal hygiene supplies, furniture and clothing to people in crisis situations
- Provides transportation to city and state agencies, medical appointments, and shopping
- Assists people in obtaining help from public agencies
- Participates and collaborates with other agencies, i.e. distributing Winterhelp and FEMA funds

Body, Mind, and Spirit:

In 1962, Bishop Henry Soenneker (2nd bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro) had a vision to serve the needs of the Catholic students and faculty at Western Kentucky University.
As Western's enrollment grew, so did the congregation. So, in 1967, the old house was torn down and replaced with the current building, which was dedicated on October 27, 1968.
The The WKU Catholic Campus Center has been served by six priests since 1962 - Fr. Bill Allard, Fr. Phillip Waters, O.S.B., Fr. Thomas O'Connor, O.S.B., Fr. Raymond Goetz, and Fr. John Little. The Center is currently staffed by Fr. Darrell Venters and Sister Elaine Byrny.
Center serves the students, faculty, and staff of Western Kentucky University and members of the local community. The Center facility is very functional and we try to give people a comfortable place to pray, study, and relax. We encourage and welcome student involvement. We are proud of our rich history and we look forward to serving the current and future needs of the church.
