The Rev. John McRaith said “there’s no one left on the bench in Jesus’ ballpark” as he spoke of the need for unity in the church during the 2008 Chrism Mass on March 18 at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
Every church and chapel in the Owensboro Diocese was represented during the Mass to take three oils blessed by the bishop back to their house of worship. “This is a symbol of our unity,” the bishop said. “It can’t happen someplace else. This happens here.”
The bishop gave his homily on the opening lines of Isaiah 61, which were read during the Mass by Ursuline Sister Suzanne Sims.
“Jesus read from Isaiah that the messiah was anointed to do these thing: Bring good tidings to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives, recover the sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free,” the bishop said.
He called on everyone to listen closely to the words and ponder them in their hearts.
Several Ursuline Sisters were involved in the Mass, in helping people be seated or taking the priests to their stations during Communion. Sisters Alicia Coomes and Jane Miriam Hancock accepted the oils for the Mount Saint Joseph Chapel.
